The smart way to make money on a blog is a personal choice, but I have found in talking with people over the years that many have no clue how to do that.
The exception is if they’re joining a specific business opportunity, such as a network marketing company, where your primary goal is to sell products and recruit new members.
However, many people would just like to start a blog and make a little money on the side. Once they get hooked on it, like I have, they begin to think about making a full-time income.
If that might be you some day, I do think you need to look at your end game when it comes to how you blog and make money.
The easiest way to monetize a blog is to join an affiliate marketing program. This is the case because the affiliate merchant will give you everything you need to get started earning money.
There are various forms of affiliate marketing you can use to make money, and we’ll talk about those individually here in a minute.
First, let me say that affiliate marketing is a business model, and it’s something you should study if you want to make the most money possible.
The biggest problem I see in affiliate marketing is people jump around from one program to another without ever actually making any money. This is primarily due to the fact that many affiliate programs are free to join so people do that over and over.
How can you make money in affiliate marketing?
I personally really like this affiliate program. Google sells advertising for you, and you make money when people click on the ads.
It’s pretty cut and dried. You need to join the Google Adsense program, and then place code on your blog.
Google will match the advertisers to the theme of your blog. When people click on an ad you earn 68% of the advertising sale.
So, if an ad cost $1, and someone clicks on it, you would earn .68 cents. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but once you get a decent amount of traffic coming to your blog your income will increase.
The way to do that is to increase the number of blog posts you have so you’re getting traffic from multiple keyword searches. Then promote your blog, and the various posts, all over the Internet using social media.
You can monitor your traffic to see what your cost per click rate is at. To make more money you need to have more people coming to your blog, and get more clicks.
The other way to increase your Google AdSense income is to develop more blogs in various niches. When you do this along with your first blog, your income can greatly increase.
Cost Per Action
With this affiliate business model you get paid whenever somebody completes the required action. This usually is filling out a lead form, or possibly downloading software from the affiliate merchant.
The best way to start with this is to join an affiliate network. One of the top ones I’ve used over the years is Max Bounty.
Another really good site to learn about cost per action affiliate marketing is Offer Vault. It’s important that you master affiliate marketing strategies in this business model if you expect to earn money.
Pay Per Sale
Join an affiliate network such as Amazon or ClickBank and find physical and digital products to sell. Blogging is a great way to promote your affiliate products using text links that go to a sales page, or placing banners on your blog.
The people who do the best in the pay per sale business model are those who purchase the product and learn all about it. They then promote it from a position of experience as opposed to just rehashing the sales page of the product in blog articles.
Writing review articles and email messages to a mailing list work great for selling affiliate products. You can’t effectively do this without owning the product you are trying to sell.
Best Way To Monetize A Blog
If you were to take a poll, on the the best way to monetize a blog, you’re going to get answers all over spectrum. I haven’t really even mentioned selling your own product which is what I do when it comes to my freelance blog writing service.
However, I personally am partial to Google Adsense because of how easy it is to set up. I have made thousands of dollars over the years in various niches.
I will tell you that the hardest part is generating enough traffic, to get enough clicks, so you are earning a meaningful monthly income.
If you’re looking at blogging on a long-term basis, consider developing your blog into what is known as an authority blog. Depending on the niche, this can be very time-consuming, but in the long run could earn you a substantial four, five, or even six-figure income.
In my opinion there is no better source for training on making money with Google AdSense then Chris Lee’s blog RankXL. Pick up his 5 part mini course on earning $100/day with Adsense.
I also suggest spending some time reading the many great posts he has made on the subject of making money with Google AdSense. He even talks about how his income has grown from month-to-month, and what he is doing right now to continue to grow his income.
Do you have to choose one best way to monetize a blog? Of course not!
Many people implement one or more affiliate marketing methods into making money on their blog. However, here’s one thing to consider on that.
If you focus on a specific way to make money you’re going to do a better job at that. Also, when you give your blog readers less options, you can increase your income more that way on the affiliate program or product you are focusing on.
This is another reason why I like the Google AdSense affiliate program. You can strategically place three ads on your blog, and then just focus on content creation and adding more blog posts.
If you enjoy the theme of your blog it is easy to do this on a regular basis. If you’re looking at adding multiple niche blogs, and don’t have a specific passion for those, then you want to hire a freelance blog writer such as myself!
