Like anything there is more then one way to skin a cat.
Let me give you 3 ways to make money in affiliate marketing without your own website.
1. Promote your affiliate link directly. Every affiliate product comes with your own sales page url coded with your affiliate i.d. number.promoting it and play the numbers game.
2. Buy a domain name and redirect it. One problem with promoting your affiliate sales page URL is it is often bulky and not very professional looking.
One way around that is to buy a professional domain name and redirected to your sales page. This way when you're advertising people see the professional domain name URL and not your affiliate URL.
3. Build an email list. This is actually the best thing you can do if you don't want to build a website or start a blog. build an email list and then promote your affiliate products to it.
I still like the idea of buying a domain name and redirecting it to your affiliate page. Promote this domain name in your email so people are more likely to click on it.
Now having said this, I just want to go on record that I feel the best way to do affiliate marketing is to start a blog and use it in a variety of ways to do affiliate marketing.
Having your own blog allows you to build some credibility with your readers. You can also build an email list off of your blog.
Years ago I learned about a form of advertising known as top of mind awareness, or TOMA for short.
This is where I think having a blog and doing email marketing can really be used to your benefit.
You don't spend much time trying to sell your affiliate products. What you do is build up your own brand and credibility through offering useful information in the form of blog post and email messages.
You focus more on giving back to your reader and less on selling. Of course you want to include links back to your affiliate sales page so when somebody is ready to take the next step and make a purchase they are going to think of you and click on that link.
In summary, no you do not need your own website to make money in affiliate marketing. However, depending on how competitive the niche is, there are advantages to at least having a blog tied in with email marketing.
